Why Working From Home In Your Pyjamas Is a Terrible Idea

Unpopular Opinion Ahead

Freelancers and remote workers are told that working from home while lounging in your pyjamas is the epitome of living the dream. I’m here to say if you’re serious about working from home, this is the last thing you should be doing.

I’ve been working remotely part-time for several years now, and am just starting to transition to a fully remote schedule. When I started out, I loved the idea that I had the freedom to not get dressed that day. I loved that my clients had no idea what I was wearing, and that I didn’t have to look professional and put-together. I loved the idea of being able to work in my pyjamas.

What I didn’t love, was the reality.

I quickly realised that the days when I didn’t bother to change out of my pj’s were my least productive days. I felt blah, and lethargic, and mediocre. My work was blah, and lethargic, and mediocre.

But the days when I put on my big girl trousers and dressed like a professional were the days when my work was energetic, inspired, and competent.
