How to Learn a New Language Using These Apps

Spoiler alert — they’re not just language learning apps

My New Year’s resolution for 2019 was to learn German. Not all of it, obviously. I’m not completely insane! My goal was to get started, and to make steady progress. Well, it’s almost a year on, and I did get started, and I did make progress, but I wouldn’t exactly call it steady. I’m planning to continue learning German as my 2020 goal, this time hopefully with more consistency.

I’ve learned quite a lot along the way this year, and wasted a fair amount of time trying to find an approach that worked for me. I want to pass on some of what I discovered in the hopes that you can find some of the information valuable in your own language learning journey.

Why Apps?

Computers and the internet have made language learning affordable and accessible in a way unprecedented before now. 20 years ago I would have had to take expensive lessons, or move to Germany in order to make any headway in learning German. Of course, books have always been available, but they on their on have significant downfalls — namely, you can’t hear the language, you can’t practice your pronunciation, and you can’t get feedback.
