Is it possible to salvage an Upwork account with bad reviews?

About a year and a half ago, I decided to get serious about freelancing with the hope of building it up into a serious side-line. I had been proofreading and editing on the side through my contacts at a couple of Universities, so I opened an Upwork account focused on proofreading, editing, and copywriting. I started out pretty strong and landed a few customers including some ongoing work.

My one-off customers were very happy with my work, but hardly any of them actually left reviews. My ongoing customers were likewise happy, but couldn’t leave reviews because our contracts weren’t closed yet.

And then I screwed it all up

A few months after I started on Upwork my family basically fell apart. My father had a heart attack and was in a coma for about a week. Bad enough. Then we found out that a) he had his heart attack in his side-piece’s bed b) he’d been screwing around for years behind my mum’s back and c) he’d been stealing money from our family business that he contributed very little to in order to fund his secret second family! The fall-out was pretty drastic. My brother and I lost all our money and the businesses we had worked so hard to build after we were left holding all our father’s debts when he walked away from…
