And I don’t mean to bang on, but I do want to offer my personal perspective.

I grew up in Northern Ireland, where people were constantly exposed to terrorist attacks for 30 years.

I’ve seen people in mental and physical distress in public there, and not once have I seen anyone hesitate to help them. In that moment, it doesn’t matter who they are, which side they support, or whether they’re your enemy or not. People help regardless, without thought and without hesitation.

If these people can keep their common decency, despite decades of terrorist attacks and trauma, how can we excuse the lack of common decency on the part of Americans on the basis of just one terrorist attack? Quite frankly, it’s insulting.
